As a young guy I lived and attended university for a year in the Philippines. During my travels there I met lots of people who really had nothing. I remember one time visiting a family of six in their home that was about the size of my master bedroom today.
They were incredibly hospitable and brought out the best that they had. I’ve got to be honest and say the food wasn’t great. And when they brought out brown swilly water to drink, I just said “Lord protect me!” and went for it. I felt I couldn’t say no when they were offering their best.
But one of the things that stood out to me most about those people was how happy they were. While they were materially poor, they were rich in relationships, in culture and in the natural beauty of the country.
When we measure happiness, we tend to think about stuff. And to a point, it does make things easier. But this thanksgiving, let’s remember that riches are about relationships, and a happy life happens when you make a difference in the life of someone else.
