Ok, there are a lot of things you MUST HAVE IN ORDER TO WIN. You need good products/services, good accounting systems, HR systems, processes blah blah. And I don’t disagree. But none of that means anything if you don’t have this one thing that trumps them all, every time, in every country, spanning every single industry:
YOU MUST HAVE A WORKFORCE TOTALLY COMMITTED TO WINNING!
Everyone, from the receptionist to the facilities guy to the salespeople, ops folks, finance teams, temporary admin help, summer staff, and everyone else in between must be:
- Positive!
- Engaged!
- Growing!
- Team focused!
- Thinking about better ways to do things!
- Servant hearted!
- Committed!
- Appreciated!
- Loyal!
- Honest!
- Enthusiastic!
Leaders must be…
Committed to building and developing their people, every day of the year, through good economic times and bad, when they feel like it and when they don’t.
It’s not your people that are your greatest asset, it’s your A-players who are your greatest asset. You don’t even WANT to keep everyone! You want to keep people who you can honestly say that you would enthusiastically rehire if you could do it all over again.
And A-players are built through intentionality and mentorship.
Idealistic?
Just because you don’t perfectly live up to every ideal doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have them! You don’t have the ideal marriage, body, job, or friendships. That doesn’t matter. Keep striving for the ideal.
A team where every member is rowing in the same direction and totally committed will win every time, in every industry, and in every market!
