I met with an executive team this week, and we discussed this idea:
AS A LEADER, IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU, IT’S ABOUT THEM
Because, as the saying goes, the entire population of the world, and of your company, is made up (with one exception) of other people.
You don’t matter in the equation. They do.
So, the one thing real leaders don’t do is…
TAKE SELFIES
They’re not trying to thrust themselves into the spotlight. They’re celebrating the wins of their team.
Leaders take the blame when things go wrong, and sidestep the credit when they win.
If your team is winning, other people will notice. You don’t have to inform them that you’re the amazing ingredient that made the win possible. If you are, others will figure it out all on their own.
Whenever you meet someone in a leadership role who is constantly bragging about their accomplishments, you know they’re not a true leader. They’re just insecure.
Today, ask yourself how you’re highlighting the strengths of your team and putting the focus on them, not on you.
Have a great week!
