Do you work with someone who esteems himself very highly? Do you like this person? Have you hired someone who believes that he/she is a truly amazing genius? There is a crop of people out there who have been raised to believe that they don’t have to earn anything. They’re amazing just because they are. Here’s why I think thinking less of yourself is a better way to go.
You have to listen.
Why would an amazing superstar need to listen to anyone? We should all be listening to them! But when you think you aren’t necessarily a loving God’s gracious gift to your workplace, you have to pay attention and listen up because otherwise you might be left behind.
You realize that all success is a team effort.
No one wins alone. Some people are the face of the organization, but without a team behind them, they wouldn’t get anywhere. This is true for solopreneurs too btw. Look around and you’ll find that your success is dependent on others. People with a very high view of themselves usually can’t build team well. It takes humility to realize that, in some ways, you are the dumbest person in the room.
You have to work. Hard.
It’s my experience that the smartest person in the room can never compete with the hardest working person. Being smart is nice, but if I had to choose between those two qualities, I would take the hardest worker. The good news is that anyone can be a hard worker. Hard work is about attitude, not talent.
It’s very rare that I meet someone who I think isn’t smart enough. When I see a problem, usually it’s because the person isn’t good enough. By good I mean qualities like high integrity, perseverance, humility, drive, positivity, commitment, and having a servant attitude.
