My dad, bless his heart, was a great man and a passionate Norwegian.  He didn’t speak English until he was 15, and always held on to his Norwegianisms.  He would say things like:

  • I’ll have another piece of pie just. (Translation: I’ll have just one more piece of pie)
  • Give me a pants (Translation: Hand me that pair of pants please)
  • Take and give me that plier (Always with the ‘take and’ preceding a request)

And others.  Endearing really.  And he had very little modern sense of humor.

So, while I was a teenager watching SCTV and Saturday Night Live, he was more into the knock knock line of jokes.  Which actually he would never have had any interest in either.  He was far too busy to be concerned with humor.

That all changed when he brought home a record called “I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas” with Yogi Yorgesson.  This is a collection of 3-minute songs, all beginning with an accordion run up and ending with one going down, featuring Yorgesson singing and narrating in a thick Scandinavian accent.

This corny record slayed dad dead.  He was beside himself, helpless with mirth.

To put it mildly, it didn’t hit the mainstream.

So, on Sunday when our pastor referred to it (thanks Mark!) my jaw dropped.  That someone else on earth knows “I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas” was amazing to me.

Anyway, the title song talks about how Christmas is filled with conflict.  Here’s a taste:

“After dinner my aunt and my wife’s uncle Louie

Get into an argument, they’re awful screwy

Then all my wife’s family say Louie is right

And my goofy relations they yoin in the fight…”

So, how about you? Did you experience any conflict this Christmas season?  Locked up in a house together, not allowed to see friends and relatives?

Of course you did!  You’re human, as are all of your close people, so conflict is just part of the package.

So, today I want to give you a little insight on DISC Personalities™ that you won’t find in my course, or any other printed material on the website.

Here’s a chart briefly describing what engages, and what alienates each of the personality types:

[table id=2 /]

Are you alienating the C’s in your life by putting them under time pressure or not giving them enough quiet/recharge time?  Are you being unnecessarily harsh with your S’s?  Are you refusing to engage in spontaneous events with your I’s?  Or not being fully forthright and honest with your D’s?Ask yourself how you could be more effective with the person in question, and how you’re contributing to the conflict unnecessarily. you don’t know what these categories mean, you can take my free DISC Personalities™ Assessment here:

You can download a free, one page cheat sheet on DISC Personalities™ here:

Read the chart, share it with someone you love, and talk about how to have a better, healthier, relationship!

And remember in this time of New Year’s resolutions where EVERYTHING! MUST! CHANGE! ALL! AT! ONCE!

Our Clients Love the Professional Leadership Institute

Your team will, too! Check out some reviews from our students.
The PLI program was invaluable to our network.
The range of topics delivered, the open dialogue, experience, and examples that PLI brought to each session were outstanding and provided a path for our Franchisees and Managers to look at leadership, coaching, and connecting with their teams in a new light. Many have implemented these strategies in their bakeries and have seen immediate results.

Highly recommend to help your team move forward
We have locations around BC and Alberta, so getting people on the same page can be very difficult... Until now. Our entire management team and location managers take the same great courses and then meet monthly online with our coach to apply it to our situation. People are engaged, the courses are excellent, we love our coach, and we are all learning together!

The result has been a transformation of our culture.
We decided to implement PLI's strategies across the country in over 150 locations and over 3500 employees.  The result has been a transformation of our culture.  People's lives have been positively impacted - professionally and personally.  Morale is high and sales and profits are up as a result.

I had no idea that running a business could be this fun!
In less than 18 months of working with Trevor, he has transformed my business from being average to exceptional, where mediocrity is not acceptable, where being great is standard.  Working with PLI has allowed me to realize my dream of not simply owning a job, but owning a business.

Our culture has taken major steps forward this year
Our culture has taken major steps forward this year with Trevor’s help.  He is funny, relatable, and his tools are very very practical and have helped us focus and upgrade our teams throughout our retail network. Trevor recently spoke to an employee group, and one person remarked, “I could listen to Trevor all day.”   We would highly recommend Trevor.

The results have been remarkable
At first, we resisted, “This just won’t work with a law firm.” But we persisted and the results have been remarkable: our client base and profits have steadily improved, and staff engagement and morale is the healthiest its ever been.

Trevor was incredibly well-received by the entire organization. He was able to articulate people issues that many of our franchisees were experiencing and provided them with practical ways to make positive changes.
