So says the old (dumb) joke.
However, there is a growing idea out there that work is a bad thing, and the ideal would be winning the lottery and never having to work again.
But this isn’t how human beings are made.
Look at kids. Their play is almost always work. In our house that looked like setting up doll houses, nurturing families, building construction projects, and fighting battles. All work.
The reality too, is that you’ll spend the vast majority of your life engaged in work. Far more than the time you’ll spend with your family or engaged in hobbies.
For most of us, work provides the structure needed in our lives, and gives us a purpose too.
So this morning I want you to ask yourself these questions about the job you wish you could afford to quit:
- Are you doing your very best to be engaged in your work?
- Is your attitude locked in at a 10 every morning?
- Do you do something each day to add value or brighten the life of someone around you?
- Are you working to set and achieve your goals?
- Are you doing your best to build positive relationships with your co-workers?
Most of us don’t have “dream jobs.” We didn’t become an astronaut or a rock star or a professional athlete.
We work because we have bills to pay. But the level of passion and engagement you put into your job in large part determines how happy you are doing it. That’s the highway flagger who smiles at everyone, the retail employee who gives exceptional customer service, or the welder who gives 100% effort every shift.
Every job is important, and the passion you bring to it gives it dignity.
Do your best at the job you have, and you’ll find that you’ll enjoy it more too.
Cheering for you!
